Decks and fences give additional living space, increase the resale and aesthetic value any property. But before you go out and shop for supplies for erecting a fence or a deck, there are several things to consider: aesthetic, maintenance, price, and lifestyle.
Pressure-treated Timber:
Many fences and decks are made from pressure-treated timber mainly because it’s the most affordable wood. But the process of pressure treating does not make it 100% resistant to water and/or moisture, meaning you’ll have to use water repellent to the structure at least once a year for protection against moisture damage. There are certain brands of pressure-treated wood that are designed for outdoor use. They contain a good preservative system which makes use of copper as the primary active ingredient. Copper is a naturally occurring mineral. It is a very effective and commonly used fungicide. Some manufacturers of pressure-treated timber add a compound called “quat” in order to enhance the performance of the wood against wood-eating insects and fungi that could tolerate copper.
Maintenance:
A regularly maintained fence or deck made of pressure-treated timber can last up to 4 years. Speaking of maintenance, it must be thoroughly washed annually with a detergent to remove algae, dirt, mold, and moss. Also, using a pressure washer is a quick way to clean a deck. When the structure has completed dried, a sealant must be applied. A sealant can help prevent both splintering and discolouration due to moisture.
Red Cedar:
This type of timber naturally has preservative oil making it resistant to insect damage and decay. Its beautiful colour, texture, and grain make it a popular choice. It’s one of the most attractive materials for fences or decks. Cedar is lighter compared to pressure-treated timber, making it easier to work with. However, this also means that it’s more expensive.
Maintenance:
Wash deck or fence annually with water and detergent. Do not use a pressure washer on a Cedar fence or deck. Cedar is no doubt durable, but it is still softwood and cans still get damaged due to much water pressure.
Composite Decking
This is made from a combination of timber fibers and resin. It resembles real wood and does not require staining or painting. It doesn’t crack, splinter, warp, and rot.
Maintenance
Periodic washing with some water and soap is essential in order to get rid of accumulated dirt on the surface. This can also prevent the accumulation of pollen and dirt that will cause mold and mildew growth. A pressure washer should be used to clean and rinse the structure. However, it should not be used to blast off soiling agents, as the dirt will sink deeper into the material. Before washing the whole deck, test on an area.
