The most important thing about cutting steel is to know what you are dealing with. You will need different tools to cut different types of steel. For really thin sheets of stainless steel, you won’t need anything fancier than a pair of tin snips. We will attempt to describe the cutting process for thin (25-15 gauge) and medium gauge stainless steel sheets. Read on to find out how to perform both.

To Cut Thin Stainless Steel

1. Lay out the sheet of stainless steel. Mark off the area you intend to cut. One word about snips you can get them to cut in a straight line, but there are also ones that curve either right or the left. The type of cut you want will determine the shears you use. You also have to buy them with the specific thickness of the material in mind.

2. Place the edge inside the jaws completely. Make a cut without bringing the snips to a close. This will prevent jagged edges. Now repeat the process along the cut line. You should wear thick work gloves and goggles just in case of flying shards or coming in contact with and edge.
