Coupons On The Internet: Use The Good – Beware ‘O The Bad

There is a growing array of internet sites which collect and distribute discount coupons for both online and brick-and-mortar stores. Here are some writeups from a WSJ blog, Mashable.com, and Lifehacker.com which list several sites that do this. http://blogs.wsj.com/independentstreet/2008/10/31/how-can-you-save-10000-use-coupons/
http://mashable.com/2008/11/27/cyber-monday-deals/, and http://lifehacker.com/software/coupons/find-discounts-online-with-coupon-chief-233654.php.
According the them, it is a good way to save a lot of money, and they are probably right. They list sites such as CyberMonday.com, Dealio.com, DealTaker.com, eBay.com Deals, FatWallet.com, GottaDeal.com, Mahalo.com, RetailMeNot.com, and Couponchief.com
These sites of course solicit retailers and manufacturers to place coupons on their sites, which is a good way for retailers to attract traffic and boost sales. However, if you are a merchant or manufacturer with a proprietary product, you should be warned to read the fine print (and not so fine print) of the Terms and Conditions before putting any info on these sites. We were recently approached at hideahorse.com to set up a store & coupons at one of these sites and were shocked to find the following verbiage giving them the right to use our information FREE and even manufacture our product. It reads like this:
“You hereby grant ______ (name ommitted) a perpetual, world-wide, royalty-free license to distribute copy, adapt, reproduce, transmit and otherwise use content and information you post as a coupon or coupon comment for any purpose and in any media now known or hereinafter developed. You expressly agree that we are free to use any ideas, concepts, know-how, or techniques contained in any coupon or communication you send to us without compensation and for any purpose whatsoever, including but not limited to, developing, manufacturing and marketing products and services using such information.”
